Starting with an early settlement dating from about 1600 years ago, Jakarta has grown to become a densely populated city and the capital of Indonesia. Jakarta has always been a centre for trade. The old capital, Batavia, was the main port city for the Dutch East India Company, and was known around the world as a source of wealth through commerce.
The world’s great cities are more than just interesting places to visit. They are also centres of business, government and culture. While all big cities face similar challenges in providing services for their inhabitants, it is each city’s unique features that we all long to explore if we are ever lucky enough to travel there.
